Why You Can't Just Throw Fire Extinguishers in the Trash
Fire extinguishers are pressurized cylinders containing chemical agents — and even an "empty" extinguisher usually still holds residual pressure. Throwing one in a dumpster, leaving it at a curb, or tossing it in a recycling bin creates real safety and legal problems:
- Pressurized cylinders can rupture when crushed in a garbage truck, injuring sanitation workers
- Dry chemical agents are regulated and most municipal landfills won't accept them in bulk
- CO₂ and clean agent units require specialized depressurization before disposal
- Florida hazardous waste rules apply to commercial generators — businesses can be fined for improper disposal
We handle all of that. Every extinguisher dropped off at our shop is depressurized, broken down, and routed to the appropriate recycling or hazmat stream — at no cost to you. If a unit is still serviceable, we may also offer to recharge it instead, which is often more cost-effective than replacement.
How Free Fire Extinguisher Disposal Works
No appointment, no paperwork, no fees. Three simple steps from drop-off to done.
Bring Them to Our Shop
Drive to 3200 62nd Ave N in St. Petersburg — just off I-275. Walk-ins welcome Mon–Fri, 8am–4pm. Bring one extinguisher or a full pickup truck bed — both are fine.
We Inspect & Sort
Our certified technicians check each unit. Anything still serviceable can be recharged or hydrostatic tested instead — often cheaper than replacement. Anything truly end-of-life goes to disposal.
We Handle the Rest
We depressurize cylinders, separate components, and route everything to the proper recycling or hazmat stream. You leave the same day with the units off your hands — no fee, no follow-up paperwork required.
Note: Drop-off only. We don't offer pickup service for fire extinguisher disposal — even for larger quantities. Bring them to us and we'll take care of the rest.
Every Type of Fire Extinguisher — Every Brand, Every Size
If it's a fire extinguisher and it's expired, damaged, discharged, or just no longer needed — we'll take it. We accept every standard type currently in use, plus older units you may have inherited from a previous tenant or business.
We also accept extinguishers from any brand — Amerex, Ansul, Buckeye, Badger, Kidde, Pyro-Chem, Victory, and older brands that may no longer be in production.
Note: We no longer accept AFFF or FFFP foam extinguishers due to PFAS regulations. For those, contact your local hazmat facility.
For Property Managers, Facility Managers, and Compliance Officers
Managing fire safety for a commercial building, office complex, or multi-site portfolio means dealing with expired and damaged extinguishers on a regular basis. Here's why bringing them to us makes the compliance side easier.
No Liability for Improper Disposal
Florida hazardous waste rules apply to commercial generators. If a property manager disposes of expired extinguishers in regular trash and it's traced back, the liability falls on the building. We handle disposal through proper recycling and hazmat channels — your responsibility ends when you hand them over.
One-Stop Compliance Visit
Bring expired units in for disposal and current units in for annual inspection, recharge, or certification — all in the same trip. Most visits done in under an hour, even with mixed bins.
Replace While You're Here
If you're disposing of units that need to be replaced, we stock certified refurbished extinguishers ready for immediate deployment — fully charged, tagged, and compliant with NFPA 10. Walk in with old ones, walk out with replacements.
Full-Service Facility Since 1999
Family-owned and operating from our 10,000 sq ft St. Petersburg facility for over 25 years. Florida State Fire Marshal licensed, DOT-authorized for hydrostatic testing, and authorized distributor for the major manufacturers. Disposal is just one of the things we do.
Serving Tampa Bay & Pinellas County
Most fire extinguisher disposal customers driving to our St. Petersburg facility are coming from somewhere in Pinellas, Hillsborough, or Manatee County. Our location at 3200 62nd Ave N — just off I-275 — keeps the trip under 30 minutes from most of Tampa Bay.
Customers Regularly Drop Off Extinguishers From:
If you're outside Tampa Bay and looking to dispose of fire extinguishers, contact your county hazardous waste facility — most counties operate household hazardous waste collection programs that accept extinguishers. We're happy to dispose of units brought to our St. Petersburg facility, but we don't offer pickup or shipping disposal services.
Fire Extinguisher Disposal FAQs
Is fire extinguisher disposal really free?
Yes. We accept fire extinguishers for disposal at no charge to walk-in customers. There's no minimum quantity, no service fee, and no paperwork required. Just bring them to our St. Petersburg facility during business hours.
Do I need to call ahead before dropping off extinguishers?
No appointment needed. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm. If you're bringing in a large quantity (50+ units), a quick call to (727) 620-3473 beforehand is appreciated so we can have a cart or bin ready when you arrive.
Can I just throw fire extinguishers in the trash?
No. Fire extinguishers are pressurized cylinders that can rupture when crushed in a garbage truck — creating a real safety hazard for sanitation workers. Most municipal landfills won't accept them in bulk, and Florida hazardous waste rules apply to commercial generators. Proper disposal requires depressurizing the cylinder and routing the contents to the correct recycling or hazmat stream.
What if my extinguisher is still pressurized?
Bring it in as-is. Don't try to depressurize it yourself — that's how injuries happen. Our certified technicians have the equipment and training to safely depressurize any cylinder type, including high-pressure CO₂ and clean agent units. Just transport it carefully (keep it upright, avoid rough handling) and we'll take it from there.
Do you accept fire extinguishers from outside Tampa Bay?
If you're willing to drive to our St. Petersburg facility, yes — we don't restrict disposal by zip code. But we don't offer pickup or shipping disposal services. If you're outside Tampa Bay, the most practical option is your county's household hazardous waste collection program. Most Florida counties operate one.
My extinguisher just expired — does it really need to be disposed of?
Maybe not. Fire extinguishers don't have a hard expiration date — they have inspection and service intervals. A cylinder past its 12-year hydrostatic test date may just need hydrostatic testing to be returned to service. A cylinder past its 6-year maintenance interval may just need recharging. Bring it in and we'll inspect it — disposal is the last resort, not the default.
Can I get replacements while I'm there?
Yes. We stock certified refurbished extinguishers ready for immediate deployment — fully charged, tagged, and compliant with NFPA 10. Drop off your old units, pick up serviceable replacements, walk out compliant in one visit.
What types of extinguishers do you not accept?
We no longer accept AFFF or FFFP foam extinguishers due to evolving PFAS regulations. For those, your county's hazardous waste program is the right channel. We accept all other common types including ABC, BC, Purple K, CO₂, Class K wet chemical, Class D combustible metal, clean agent, water, water mist, and Halon (which we may also buy from you rather than dispose of).
Ready to Get Those Old Extinguishers Off Your Hands?
Drive to our St. Petersburg facility. Walk in. Drop them off. Walk out — same day, no appointment, no fee. We've been doing this for Tampa Bay businesses since 1999.
