Fireboy Engine Room Suppression Systems

Fireboy offers engine room fire suppression systems in both FK-5-1-12 (current standard) and HFC-227ea (legacy, still available). All systems include a helm display and heavy-duty mounting bracket. The product line covers systems from 25 cubic feet through 1,800 cubic feet of engine compartment volume.

ABYC A-4 requires Manual/Automatic activation for most recreational vessel installations — automatic-only systems do not meet this requirement for new installations. All Fireboy MA and MU series systems include the manual pull cable, helm display, and bracket as a complete package.

MA Series — Manual/Automatic, HFC-227ea
25 – 1,500 ft³ · Includes helm display & bracket

The original Fireboy MA series using HFC-227ea agent. Still available and widely installed — Fireboy continues to service and support these systems. If you have an existing MA series system and need a replacement, we can source it. Note: HFC-227ea is subject to the AIM Act phasedown; FK-5-1-12 systems are recommended for all new installations.

CG Series — Automatic, FK-5-1-12 Vertical
25 – 1,000 ft³ · Automatic activation · Vertical mount

Automatic-only FK-5-1-12 vertical systems. Note: ABYC A-4 requires manual/automatic for most new recreational vessel installations — verify your compliance requirements before selecting an automatic-only system. Well-suited for specific commercial and retrofit applications where automatic-only is appropriate.

MA Series — Manual/Automatic, FK-5-1-12 Vertical
25 – 1,800 ft³ · Manual + automatic · ABYC A-4 compliant

The primary current-generation Fireboy system for new recreational vessel installations. FK-5-1-12 agent in a vertical cylinder with manual/automatic activation, helm display, and bracket included. Covers the full range from small outboard engine compartments through large sportfishing and yacht engine rooms. This is the system we recommend for most new installations.

CU / MU Series — FK-5-1-12 Horizontal
25 – 485 ft³ · Auto (CU) or Manual/Auto (MU) · Horizontal mount

Horizontal-mount FK-5-1-12 systems for engine compartments where vertical installation is not practical — tight spaces, under-deck installations, or compartments with limited vertical clearance. Available in automatic-only (CU) and manual/automatic (MU) configurations. Coverage to 485 ft³.

Choosing the Right Fireboy System

Three variables drive system selection: engine compartment volume, activation configuration, and agent type. Here is how to work through the decision before you call.

Step 1
Measure the engine compartment
Measure the gross interior cubic footage: length × width × height in feet. This number determines the minimum system size. Fireboy systems are rated by maximum protected volume — always meet or exceed the gross compartment volume. Do not subtract for the engine itself; gross volume is the correct measurement for system sizing under ABYC A-4.
Step 2
Manual/auto or auto-only?
ABYC A-4 requires manual/automatic activation for most new recreational vessel installations. The MA and MU series systems include the manual pull cable assembly, allowing helm-station or remote activation in addition to the thermal automatic trigger. Unless your application specifically calls for automatic-only (some commercial configurations), the MA or MU series is the correct choice for new installations.
Step 3
Vertical or horizontal mount?
Most installations use vertical-mount systems (CG and MA series). If your engine compartment has limited overhead clearance or a layout that makes vertical mounting impractical, the CU and MU horizontal series are designed for these applications. Coverage on horizontal systems tops out at 485 ft³ — larger compartments require vertical systems.
Step 4
FK-5-1-12 or HFC-227ea?
For new installations, FK-5-1-12 is the right choice — it is Fireboy's current standard and is not subject to the AIM Act HFC phasedown. HFC-227ea systems remain available for replacement and service of existing installations. If you have an existing HFC-227ea system, Fireboy continues to support it and we can source replacement systems and parts. For new builds, specify FK-5-1-12.
Real Talk

Every Fireboy MA and MU system ships complete — cylinder, heavy-duty bracket, helm display, and cable kit. That is the full system in one order. What catches people is the discharge cable length — you need to know the run from the cylinder location to the helm or pull station before ordering. Have that measurement ready when you call. We have seen boatyards order systems and then realize the included cable is not long enough for the helm run on their specific vessel. Extension cables are available but adding them after the fact adds time and cost.

Xintex Gas Detection, Engine Shutdown, and Detection Systems

The Fireboy-Xintex product line extends well beyond engine room suppression. Xintex is the marine industry's leading brand for gas detection and CO alarms. We carry the full Xintex product line.

Xintex Propane & Gasoline Fume Detectors

Single and dual-channel detectors for propane and gasoline fume detection in engine compartments, bilges, and accommodation spaces. Systems include sensor, control unit, and solenoid valve for automatic gas shutoff at alarm. ABYC standard for fuel fume detection on gasoline-powered vessels. Available in chrome and black finishes, 12V and 24V configurations.

Xintex Methane / CNG Detectors

Methane and CNG fume detection for vessels with natural gas or LPG systems. Two-alarm configuration at 20% and 50% LEL. Xintex S2B series for propane and CNG detection with integral sensor and display. Available in square and round display configurations, 12V and 24V.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Fireboy CMD6 series marine CO alarms — 12/24V DC with permanent lithium backup batteries and 7-year life. Available in white and black, with interconnect and internal relay options for connection to the FBD fire detection panel. USCG and ABYC recommended for all enclosed accommodation spaces.

Engine Shutdown Systems

ESC, ELS, and ES series engine shutdown systems — 4 to 10 circuit configurations for automatic engine shutdown on suppression system discharge. Critical for ensuring engines are off before agent release in a fire event. 9-38V DC, N.O. or N.C. circuit compatibility. Available in square and round display configurations.

FBD Fire Detection Panels

The FBD-2 two-zone and FBD-MZ twelve-zone programmable fire detection and alarm panels integrate heat detectors, smoke detectors, CO alarms, and suppression system monitoring into a single display. 12/24V DC with color LCD display on the FBD-MZ. Required for commercial vessels and larger yachts with comprehensive fire detection requirements.

Portable Extinguishers

Fireboy USCG-approved Halotron portable extinguishers — 5 lb and 11 lb units with USCG marine brackets. Halotron is a clean agent that leaves no residue, appropriate for on-deck use near electronics and navigation equipment. Note: Halotron pricing is subject to change due to agent cost volatility during the HFC phasedown — call for current pricing.

Note on cylinder recharge: Fireboy systems are factory-serviced for recharge. Unlike Sea-Fire refillable cylinders which we can recharge in-house, Fireboy cylinders are returned to the factory or a Fireboy-authorized service center for recharge after discharge. When you call us to order, we can walk you through the post-discharge process for your specific system.

Who We Work With

Our Fireboy orders come from across the country. Here is what typically drives each call.

Boat Owners — Replacement Systems

A Fireboy system discharged or failed inspection and needs replacement. We identify the correct replacement system by compartment volume and configuration, confirm the current FK-5-1-12 equivalent for legacy HFC-227ea systems, and ship direct. If you have the model number from your existing system, we can match it or recommend the current equivalent.

Boatyards & Marine Dealers

Boatyards installing Fireboy systems on new builds or performing annual service need a reliable wholesale source that knows the product. Our factory training means we can answer technical questions about system selection, cable runs, and display compatibility — not just process an order. Drop ship to your facility or direct to the vessel owner.

New Construction

Builders specifying Fireboy for new construction need complete system packages — suppression system, engine shutdown, gas detection, and fire detection panel — sized and configured correctly for the vessel. We help with product selection across the full Fireboy-Xintex line and can put together complete kit orders for single-order delivery.

Commercial Vessels — ABS Compliance

Commercial vessel operators under ABS classification need ABS-approved equipment and documentation. Our ABS Marine approval covers fire suppression systems. We supply Fireboy equipment and can provide appropriate service documentation for ABS surveys. Charter boats, commercial fishing vessels, and USCG-documented vessels are all customers we work with regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Fireboy system discharged — can you recharge it?

Fireboy cylinders are serviced through Fireboy directly or through a Fireboy-authorized service center after discharge. Unlike our Sea-Fire capability where we can recharge refillable cylinders in-house, Fireboy recharge is handled through the manufacturer's service network. We can help you identify the correct replacement system and get you back in service quickly — in many cases a replacement system is faster than the recharge process. Call us and we will walk you through your options.

What is the difference between CG, MA, CU, and MU series?

The series letters indicate activation type and mounting orientation. CG = automatic-only, vertical mount. MA = manual/automatic, vertical mount. CU = automatic-only, horizontal mount. MU = manual/automatic, horizontal mount. All current FK-5-1-12 series systems include a helm display and bracket. For most new recreational vessel installations, MA (vertical, manual/automatic) is the correct choice to meet ABYC A-4 requirements.

Should I replace my HFC-227ea system with FK-5-1-12?

For new installations, yes — FK-5-1-12 is the current standard and avoids future concerns about HFC availability under the AIM Act. For existing HFC-227ea systems that are functioning and in compliance, there is no urgent requirement to replace the entire system. However, as the HFC phasedown continues, replacement cylinders may become more difficult to source and pricing will likely increase. When your existing system reaches end of service life, upgrading to FK-5-1-12 is the practical choice. Call us to discuss your specific situation.

Do Fireboy systems include the helm display?

Yes — all Fireboy MA, CG, CU, and MU systems ship as complete packages including the heavy-duty mounting bracket and helm display. The helm display shows system status and, on manual/automatic systems, provides the indicator for system activation. This is one of the reasons Fireboy is the system of choice for finished boat builds — the complete package simplifies installation and documentation.

Do you carry Xintex gas detectors?

Yes — we carry the full Xintex line including propane detectors, gasoline fume detectors, methane/CNG detectors, and CO alarms. Xintex is the industry standard for marine gas detection and is required on most gasoline-powered vessels under ABYC standards. We can supply detectors alone or as part of a complete safety package with the fire suppression system and engine shutdown.

Do you publish Fireboy pricing?

We do not publish pricing online. Fireboy pricing is confidential per manufacturer policy. Call us for current pricing on any system or product — we sell at competitive dealer pricing and can discuss volume arrangements with boatyards and dealers. Note that Halotron portable extinguisher pricing is particularly subject to change due to agent cost volatility during the phasedown period.
