It Depends on the Service — Here Is a Breakdown by Type
One of the most common questions we hear from new walk-in customers is how long the process actually takes. The answer varies by service type, but in most cases the turnaround is much faster than businesses expect — especially compared to waiting for a mobile technician to fit you into a route schedule.
Annual Inspection: 5 to 10 Minutes Per Unit
A standard annual fire extinguisher inspection — the visual and mechanical check required by NFPA 10 every 12 months — takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes per unit at our facility. We check pressure gauge reading, physical condition of the shell and valve, hose and nozzle integrity, tamper seal and pull pin, label legibility, and mounting bracket if present.
If a unit passes, we tag it and return it to you on the spot. If it needs recharging or a replacement part, we handle that immediately. For a business with 10 extinguishers, an inspection visit typically takes 30 to 45 minutes from walk-in to walk-out.
Recharge: 5 to 15 Minutes Per Unit
Recharging a discharged or low-pressure fire extinguisher at our St. Petersburg fire extinguisher service facility takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on the unit type and agent. ABC dry chemical and CO₂ units are the fastest. Clean agent systems and Class K kitchen units take slightly longer due to the agents involved and the additional weight verification steps.
Every recharge includes a post-recharge inspection and a new certification tag. You leave with a fully charged, compliant unit — not a receipt and a promise that service will happen next week.
Hydrostatic Testing: Overnight to 3 Business Days
Hydrostatic testing is more involved. The process requires depressurizing the cylinder, removing the valve assembly, filling the cylinder with water, pressurizing it to test pressure, holding for the required duration, inspecting for deformation or leaks, drying the interior, and reassembling. At our DOT-authorized facility, most standard extinguisher cylinders are turned around in 1 to 3 business days.
If you need your equipment back faster, we can often provide a certified refurbished unit as a loaner or same-day swap while your cylinder completes testing. Ask about this option when you bring units in.
6-Year Internal Maintenance: Same Day in Most Cases
Dry chemical extinguishers require a 6-year internal examination and recharge under NFPA 10 regardless of whether they have been used. This involves emptying the unit, inspecting the interior for corrosion or moisture, replacing any worn components, and recharging with fresh agent. At our facility, the 6-year service on most standard dry chemical units is completed the same day.
Dealer Bulk Turnaround: Quoted Per Order
Fire equipment dealers and contractors who send units to our facility for certification, hydrostatic testing, or refurbishment receive a quoted turnaround at the time of order. Standard bulk orders of 10 to 25 units typically ship within 3 to 5 business days. Larger orders or orders requiring hydrostatic testing are quoted individually. We ship certified and tagged units throughout the continental United States.
Walk-In vs. Mobile: The Time Comparison
When businesses compare walk-in service time to mobile service time, the math often surprises them. A mobile service company may take 2 to 4 weeks to schedule a route visit, spend 30 to 60 minutes on-site for 10 units, and require a return visit if any unit needs parts not on the truck. Total elapsed time from call to compliance: often 3 to 5 weeks.
With walk-in service, you drive in on your schedule, service is completed while you wait in most cases, and you leave compliant the same day. Total elapsed time from decision to compliance: same day.
We are open Monday through Friday. No appointment is needed for inspection and recharge service. For hydrostatic testing or large batches, a quick call ahead to (727) 620-3473 helps us prepare for your order.
